MNQ vs NQ for scalping: which one should you actually trade?

They track the same index. The choice is not about preference — it is decided by your stop distance and your drawdown limit, and the arithmetic takes about two minutes.

The usual answer is "start with micros, move up when you're consistent." It is not wrong, but it is advice about confidence when the actual constraint is arithmetic. A more useful way to decide: work out what a full stop costs on each contract, hold it against the most you can lose without breaching your account, and see which one survives.

The specifications, briefly

Both contracts track the Nasdaq-100. The micro is exactly one tenth the size.

Ten MNQ contracts are economically the same position as one NQ contract. That equivalence is the whole basis of the decision, and it is also where the hidden cost lives — more on that below.

Work backwards from the stop, not forwards from the contract

The question is not "can I afford the margin?" Margin tells you whether the broker will let you open the position. It says nothing about whether the position can hurt you badly enough to end your account. Those are different numbers and traders routinely confuse them.

The sequence that actually works:

  1. Find your real loss limit. On a funded account this is the drawdown threshold, not your balance. On a personal account it is whatever loss would make you stop following your rules — which is usually far smaller than the number you would say out loud.
  2. Decide the most you will risk on one trade as a fraction of that limit. If a single trade can take a meaningful bite out of your drawdown buffer, the size is wrong regardless of how good the setup looks.
  3. Measure your stop in points. Not in ticks, not in "about a handle" — the actual distance your strategy needs.
  4. Divide. Risk ÷ (stop in points × point value) = contracts.

Worked through with round numbers. Take a $100,000 funded account with a $4,000 trailing drawdown limit, and a decision to risk no more than $700 on a single trade — a little over a sixth of the buffer, so four consecutive losses do not end the account.

Read the last two rows carefully. At a 50-point stop, one NQ contract is already too big — and one contract is the smallest position that exists. There is no half-NQ. The trader who insists on the E-mini at that stop distance is not choosing a contract; they are choosing to exceed their own risk rule on every single trade, and the account will end in four or five losses no matter how good the strategy is.

The real advantage of micros is granularity, not cheapness. MNQ lets you size in increments one tenth the size, so your position can match your risk instead of rounding up to it. At a 50-point stop the micro trader takes 7 contracts and risks $700 exactly. The E-mini trader has a choice between $1,000 and nothing.

This is why "trade micros until you're consistent" gets the right answer for the wrong reason. It is not a training-wheels contract. It is the one that lets the arithmetic come out right.

The cost nobody mentions

Granularity is not free, and this is the part usually left out of the comparison.

Commission is charged per contract. Ten MNQ contracts are one NQ in exposure, but they are ten commissions instead of one. Micro commissions are lower per contract, but not ten times lower — so the equivalent micro position typically costs somewhere around two to three times as much to trade as the E-mini position it replaces. Exact rates vary by broker and by prop firm, and you should check yours rather than trust a number on a website.

On a swing trade taking hundreds of points, that difference is noise. On a scalp taking eight points, it is not. Work it through for your own numbers: take your target in points, multiply by point value to get gross profit, then subtract the round-turn commission on the whole position. Do it for both contracts. For short targets and larger positions, the micro version can hand back a meaningful slice of every winner.

So the honest version of the trade-off:

Two things that are not reasons

"Micros are less liquid." Both contracts are among the more actively traded futures available, and for retail-sized orders in the regular session the difference is not what will determine your results. Check the book yourself at the times you actually trade rather than accepting either claim.

"E-minis are for serious traders." Contract size is not a seniority badge. A trader taking 20 micros is running the same exposure as one taking 2 E-minis, and the market has no opinion about which ticket it came from.

The short version

Measure your stop. Multiply by $20 and by $2. Compare both against the most you will accept losing on one trade. If the E-mini number is larger than your limit, the decision has been made for you. If it fits, then weigh the commission difference at your actual target size — and that is a calculation, not a preference.

The reason this matters here: an alert that tells you direction and entry but not size has left the hardest part of the arithmetic to you, mid-trade, with money moving.
